Pitching The Soup Storm

If you follow any of my other sites, you know I’ve been working on getting a screenplay into the hands of people who are interested in paying money to turn it into a movie.

In a recent post on Fiction Matters, Brad laid down the gauntlet and challenged his readers to come up with the Napkin Pitch. As he puts it:

If you truly know your story, you can pick out the important parts and jot them down on the spot. So… what would you write on that napkin?

This was incredibly hard for me… in fact, breaking down the story in my head into a few choice log lines has always been my weakness. My kryptonite, if you will. I immediately break out into a cold sweat at the words “give a brief synopsis of your project.” It is, however, a reality of the business I’m trying to break into – it’s a skill I need to develop.

So here, without further ado, is the Napkin Pitch of The Soup Storm:

Once upon a time, Maya was engaged to Tim. Two days before the wedding, he left her confused, devastated and trapped in a land that constantly rained soup. As she pieces together the events leading up to his departure, she uncovers the truth of their relationship that can free her from the soup storm.

To answer some questions – yes, there really is a “Soup Storm” in the script. And, yes, there are fairy tale sequences (hence the “once upon a time”). I toyed with the idea of putting in a “happily ever after” line in my napkin pitch, but I decided against it because I thought that was laying it on a bit thick.
