The Song

Posted by Mo on 22 Mar 2009 in Poetry |

I wrote this sometime back in 2005. Almost forgot I wrote it. It’s fairly self-explanatory.

Before anyone asks, “the song” is Tiny Dancer by Elton John.

The Song

You told me once that you thought of me
Every time you heard that song
And now I think of what you said
Every time I hear that song
Even though time has passed
And life has turned into memories
That song is You to me

Do you still think about me when you hear it?
That stupid little song that
You were afraid to admit that you liked…
You were surprised to hear that I liked, too…
That song became Me to you
I wonder if it is still
Or has that faded from you, too?

It was in the background and under my radar
Until you pointed it out to me
Until you told me what it meant to you
Until you told me that it was Me
Now, I hear it everywhere
In musak, in elevators, on radios, on televisions
And all I hear is You

The piano plays
Filling my ears with memories
That never seem to fade away
That stain the air with You
I breathe it in and they cling to me
No matter how much I hate looking back
