Hau’oli Makahiki Hou!
Happy New Year from beautiful Honolulu, HI!
This past year has been surreal. It seems like so much has changed, so much has happened, and yet everything is still the same. I know that makes no sense, but there you have it.
In this year I have finished a screenplay, started a new writing project, abandoned THAT writing project because a second writing project got in its way, lived without Jim for 8 months straight, met new people from Twitter and invited them to my home, learned French, and… well… there’s more. There’s so much more.
However, this post is not about looking back, it’s about looking forward – and that’s where I’m going to start getting crazygonuts…
While I’ve been doing all kinds of things this past year, the one thing that went more or less completely ignored was blogging. Not that I have any notions that I have masses of readers clamoring for my next post (I’ve long since disappointed any loyal followers with my erratic posting schedule), but I do miss blogging. The problem is that almost all of my writing energy is going into actual writing and none of it is going into my blogs. And, unfortunately, the things I’m writing aren’t short enough to even get posted here.
This year, all of that will change. That’s not to say that I’m suddenly going to limit my writings to only things that are blog-friendly from here on out. Maybe I will write something able to be posted, maybe I won’t. What I WILL be posting is progress. Daily. What did I write? How many words/pages? How long did it take me? If I didn’t write that day, WHY didn’t I write that day? As of January 22nd, I will be unemployed. My job will be writing until Jim and I finally settle on where we will be living during the second half of this year… so, I’m taking that opportunity to buckle down and really write. By the end of 2010, I want to be finished with the first draft of this “Untitled Sci-Fi/Fantasy Project” (which, as far as I can tell is going to be a 3-novel series).
I don’t expect the daily progress updates to be interesting to anyone but me… in fact, I doubt they’ll even be interesting to me at all. What I’m hoping for with this is a record of what I’ve accomplished (at least as far as writing goes) or where I fall short. The idea is that with perspective, it will be much easier for me to see the patterns or triggers that either keep me on task and motivated to write, or that keep me FROM writing. With that knowledge, I’ll be able to make changes in a more positive direction to keep me on target.
To the other writers that happen by the page now and then – perhaps you’ll be interested in seeing what a full-time writer goes through on a daily basis. Maybe seeing what lessons, thoughts, doubts, annoyances, or triumphs I will be going through will inspire you in some way (at the very least give you a cautionary tale). Maybe you’ll have tips or suggestions or words of encouragement for when I paint myself into a corner. I welcome it.
At the very least, I’ll have a goal. My ONE SINGLE New Year’s Resolution: do not go a single day without posting SOMETHING on this blog.
